Design Development - Collages

 (Impression, Strand, & Program)

How can I develop collages that have images that inspire, show different outlines, scales, details and materials, and blend all into one composition?

What is a collage?

A collage is a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing. That is what drives a design in my opinion. To think and artistically create something based on different words to help gather both information and design ideas for something much bigger. With that being said, we were asked to create three different collages that will ultimately help our design development. For each collage it had a specific theme to it. The first being "Site Impression", the second being "Strand" and lastly the third being "Program."

Site Impression

The first, Site impression was a collage where I placed images that made me think of how the site is. Given my site is in anchorage plaza in old Fulton street Brooklyn; my site gives off an impression of constant amounts of people walking and soaking in information about their surroundings. The culture in my site is extremely seen, from different races, to different tastes of food, the site is united by everyone which makes my site a thriving location for more of its culture to be brought more to life and be more known to accommodate other cultures. Mostly tourist and native residents walk through the streets but mainly the idea is visualizing life in front of them with nature being the subdominant part of the view with the buildings and skyline being the dominant. My impression is how can someone see this site and think to themselves this was once all forest, to then being a huge part of history and to now becoming the future of city building and architecture.

"Strand"

With the second one, we were asked to define the word Strand in a collage. By Definition Strand means, to drive or leave. With my collage I tried to represent that by picking two situations where one is where you currently are and you try to leave the current situation and find yourself leaving to something better.

Program

For the last one, Program was required. For this one I had to put together a collage where all three of my programs are visible through the collage. A market, culinary school and restaurant had to expressed. With that I created this collage where it expresses the idea of humans needed to make a market function and a restaurant to stay in service. But what good does that do without having knowledge. With that drive and culture brought into the programs the curiosity might arise and wanting to learn how to cook the food that was given at the restaurant or potentially cook the food that was sold in the market could be the third thing that is needed.

Part of the secret of a success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside.

Comments

  1. First and third collages are graphically strong, tectonically lacking. The first is especially flat, although great to save for your logo. There is an attempt at depth in the third collage that could open it up better for an architectural interpretation.

The most successful of the three is the middle collage, whose implication of space is incontrovertible. The real challenge is to take this spatial organization and synthesize it with your ideas of programme and parti to push the creation of architectural form.

  2. Hi Andres,
The work posted so far is in a really great direction.
The collages are very strong visually and convey the messages in a powerful way. I recommend that you move on, trying to translate some of these abstract ideas on the site and program in more tangible study models. Think of actions or operations during this translation process. Think of tectonics as well.
