Building Typologies Analysis

Building Typologies Analysis

How do we further analyze projects to help achieve a better understanding to what is necessary for my project.

Now that we have an understanding to what I want to design on Anchorage Plaza, the next phase of analysis is learning more information about other sites and projects. In this case I decided to pick out three different projects. Each one of them signifies one specific building typology so that it can give a better insight at how I can incorporate all three typologies into my design further along the way. With that, let me show you what I've analyzed and help you understand as well how I broke down these projects.

First Project - Typology (Outdoor/Hospitality) - Mercado Roma

Second Project - Typology (Educational) - Institute for the Culinary Arts

Third Project - Typology (Hospitality) - Cheering Restaurant

  2. these are good precedent studies. The diagrams are fairly clear and to the point. You are ahead of many of your peers, looking to utilize sections as a base for diagramming. However, look beyond arrows and more to adding the results of the vector represented by them.

On a more pedagogical note, you are presenting this blog (presumptively)to an informed audience. There is a bit of over explanation which is unnecessary given your intended audience.

    1. Hi Andy,

Thank you for your input. I've taken your comments into consideration and applied it to further analyze my research. One comment I will say is the reason for my over-explanation is due to requirements of my course. I am required to express and give explanation to my ideas and reasoning towards why I did my analysis for users who aren't as informed.

Furthermore, I greatly appreciate the comments made to my posts and will continue to encourage you to keep an eye towards my next posts to see your input on my design development. Thank you.

  3. Good work.
Be consistent with the types of visuals you use to explain each category for all three precedents. I think that the section drawing works much better to explain natural lighting than the rendered perspective. Similarly, the plan or isometric drawings works better than the perspective to analyze structure.
I would be also interested to know whether you consider these three projects you selected to analyze actual precedents (influential to the discipline, published work with high contribution) or case studies (projects not necessarily known but informative as to your program, site, concept or other ) .

    1. Hi Loukia,

I agree that the section drawings seemed to worked better in describing natural lighting. I have taken that into consideration and went into trying to fix the errors to create a better understanding of it.

One question I did have for the second part of your comment. I didn't quite understand what you meant by considering the three projects to analyze actual precedents. If you could please explain what you meant by that I would greatly appreciate it.

      Best,
      Andres

    2. Hi Andres,
      Thanks for your response.

My note was basically on your criteria for selecting these projects for your analysis and whether you consider these 3 projects precedents or case studies.

      Precedent Analysis
A precedent is a historic project that is commonly known to people in the profession (it may be very recent, but it will have been featured in a respected publication). Precedents present opportunities to learn how other designers take a stance, develop a concept, employ a methodology, address a site, or interpret a program.

      Case Study
A case study is not necessarily a known and "recognized" work. It involves finding an existing (not necessarily “designed”) place that can be studied to better understand how facility with a relevant program works in reality. A good case study will involve researching on the various users about their experiences. The place may or may not function adequately, it is the researcher's assignment to evaluate and learn from the case study.

I think your selection is very smart but keep this distinction as you move forward to future research and analysis.

      Looking forward to your progress.
